LOFOTEN END-TO-END HIKE

GUIDED hiking trip
lofoten // NORWAY

A supported trek through the iconic Lofoten Islands, carrying light day packs and camping on the shores of the Norwegian Sea. With our rucksacks containing only what we’ll need for the day, we’re free to explore these dramatic, rugged islands, knowing that each evening our overnight equipment will be waiting for us at our next camp. Crossing islands and contouring wild coastlines, we’ll complete a linear journey without having to carry our supplies.

The islands lie north of the Arctic Circle, experiencing the darkness of ‘polar night’ and the never-ending daylight of the ‘midnight sun’ for roughly six weeks each year. Steep granite walls rise from the ocean to reach summits that occasionally exceed 1000 metres in elevation; mountain lakes reside in the high corries in between, carved out by ancient glaciers. Deep, narrow fjords intersect the islands, with golden sands forming beaches in sheltered inlets and bays. On its outermost island of Moskenesøya is the Lofotodden National Park, established in 2018 to provide protection for some of the rare flora and fauna that inhabit the islands.

Lofoten

Location

The islands have been inhabited by humans for several thousand years, supported by the cod-rich seas which surround the islands - the area is the spawning ground for one of the largest cod stocks in the world, the Arctic cod, known locally as ‘skrei’. Today, stockfish is Lofoten’s biggest export, with many of the islands’ villages still set up to support the fishing industry.

Who's this trip for

We’ll be hiking with light day packs, carrying only the clothing, food and equipment we need for the day. Overnight bags and camping equipment will be transported between camps by vehicle, and we’ll need to set up camp each evening when we arrive. We’ll prepare dinner as a team once camp is established.

We’ll aim to hike every day of the trip, and whilst day lengths will vary, you’ll need to be happy doing back-to-back hiking days - on average 5-8 hrs of hiking (including breaks) with up to 1000m elevation gain.

Our route follows well-defined trails for the vast majority of the time, though the nature of the terrain means there are some steep ascents and descents at.

Private groups

If you have a group of friends or family who'd love this adventure, we have dates available for private groups, and can tailor trips for your needs. Please get in touch to discuss options.

Route

Our route is based around the Lofoten Long Crossing, a multi-day unsupported trek which runs the length of the Lofoten archipelago. We'll hike some of the best sections of the the route, with a few variations, to make our way along this spectacular island chain.

Our starting point is the small fishing town of Kabelvag, where café's and seafront apartments meet the traditional Rorbuer we'll be staying in - wooden cabins built out over the waters' edge to accommodate the many fishermen who flock to the area during the spring cod fishing season. Our base for the evening is just outside town, and provides an opportunity to meet the rest of the team, chat about plans, and relax after the journey from home.

Before we start hiking we'll have time to organise our clothing and equipment - we'll each need a light day-pack to hike with and a small duffle bag containing our overnight kit, which will be transported between campsites each day.

Our route takes us southwest, along the outer islands of the Lofoten archipelago - we'll follow trails which thread a line up spectacular ridges, crossing saddles between jagged granite spires, and skirting around the many high mountain lakes along the way. When we're not up high amongst the ridges and summits, we'll weave an intricate line along rugged coastal trails, on the lookout for sea eagles hunting in the surrounding waters. If you fancy a dip in the chilly waters of the lakes or the sea, there'll be time along the way.

Using the superb road and tunnel network which links the villages, we'll move from island to island by short vehicle transfers, allowing us to knit together a route through the some of the most spectacular sections of hiking, whilst taking advantage of fully-serviced campsites. Our proximity to the many small villages along the way means we’ll be able to get supplies regularly, allowing us to prepare hearty, fresh meals each evening. Mid-way through the trip we'll have a night in a Rorbuer in the small fishing village of Ballstad on a half-board basis.

Each day we’ll explore a different area, looking to continue our journey along the islands, with new views opening up each time we set out. There’s a well-established trail network, giving us flexibility to adjust our route if the weather dictates, or if we’d like an easier day.

Some mornings we’ll set out to hike directly from the camp, whilst other days we’ll take a short drive to the trailhead. At the end of the day, our hikes will either end at the campsite, or a short drive away. Nearing the western end of the archipelago, we'll use the ferry network to access trails and beaches on the northern shoreline, traversing the mountainous heart of an island back to the villages on the coast. Being out on the water here offers an entirely different perspective to our view from the mountains, with steep granite walls towering above the dark waters of the fjords - these fishing communities are often best seen and understood from the sea.

Our trip finishes in the village of A, the last settlement before the islands give way to the vast expanse of the Norwegian Sea. Our journey complete, we’ll have a final night on the islands, before beginning the journey home in the morning.

Sea eagles in Lofoten

WIldlife

White-tailed sea eagles thrive in the seas around the islands, whilst golden eagles hunt ptarmigan high up in the mountains. Along the shoreline, otters make use of the remote coves to fish, and gray seals hunt cod and catfish further off the coast.

On land, golden plovers reside in the high meadows, red-throated loons can be found in the mountain lakes, and ring ouzels nest on steep mountain sides.

accommodation

We'll have three nights of half-board accommodation during the trip in traditional Rorbuer (cabins) - typically, accommodation is in double or twin rooms. Single rooms are occasionally available though a single supplement may be charged.

The remaining six nights will be on campsites. Occasionally we can leave tents in place from day to day, but normally we'll need to take them down each morning and put them up somewhere different in the evening. We'll cook together in a large communal tent. All the campsites have toilets and hot showers.

Testimonial

Thanks again Rich for a fantastic trip - we couldn't, and wouldn't, have done it without you.
